Welcome to TheSoulSurvivors
The Soul Survivors Magazine was set up to provide information to all those Jazz, Funk and Soul enthusiasts out there.
Whether you were on the scene years ago attending all-dayers, weekenders, warehouse parties and Soul nights around the country and have come back to find out what is still on; or whether you have stayed on the scene and still interested in finding other events to go to; we hope we cater for you.
We have club and record reviews, interviews, reader's stories, competitions and a guide to WHAT'S GOING ON. We encourage readers to write in with their reviews of events, records and stories from the past.
What background do we have that makes us think we can put a magazine together?
Well for those of you who don't know us personally, I will briefly explain.
Fitzroy 'Da Buzzboy' has been DJing for over 25 years. He grew up on a diet of Greg Edwards, Robbie Vincent and frequented clubs where Paul Anderson and George Power played. If you look at his info on myspace, www.myspace.com/dabuzzboyfitzroy you will see the artists and other DJ's he has worked with over the years. There is too much to fit into this space! He has a vast knowledge in music and has mixed and co-produced a number of singles/albums and more recently written and produced a track with Noel McKoy - this is still going through fine tuning, but we will let you know when it is available.
As for me, well, I rarely know the names of artists, songs and never know the label of a record. I am not proud of this but like many others I just sing along and know what I like. I started listening to soul in my early teens, mainly through Robbie Vincent on a Saturday morning and went to my first Caister Weekender at 17. Since then I've been to many weekenders, all dayers, club nights and made many friends for life. Growing up in Kent meant mainly frequenting the Kent and Essex Clubs (Flicks, Goldmine, Stage 3, Zero 6 etc.) and following DJ's, such as Chris Hill and Gary Dennis but this has changed over the past 10 years as clubs in Kent have disappeared and London seems to be where most of the action is in the South East.
The important thing for us is that we have a love of the music in different ways and felt there was a gap in the market for a more mature look at the soul scene. Yes there are plenty of music magazines out there, but how many of them are aiming at our generation? How many of them want to hear from you? How many will listen? We are aiming at people who have grown up with soul and have fond memories of the all dayers, weekenders and regular club nights.
There are many Soul Survivors out there and we intend to find them!
We want to hear from you!
